Explanation of the Hadith: (When you trade by way of 'inah)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : All praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own selves and from the evil of our deeds. Whoever Allah guides, none can mislead, and whoever He misleads, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
On such an occasion as this, we are usually reminded of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):. The Arab governments have been trying for many years to stand against the enemy, this usurping Jewish entity that was the most humiliated of the peoples on earth. But, unfortunately, they have not taken hold of the causes of victory, which our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) has gathered in a short phrase of His noble verses, namely His saying: [Muhammad 47:7]. Therefore, when a patient turns away from taking the beneficial, successful, and effective treatment, he will not be cured. How much less so if he takes on one disease upon another, for he is undoubtedly in a state of increasing illness. Some countries have realized the necessity of taking hold of the causes of strength and security, assuming that these are the causes that will bring them victory over their enemy. But because of their distance from their religion in the two aspects mentioned earlier, namely the scholarly or jurisprudential aspect and the practical aspect, they assumed that their victory over their enemy would be by the same means by which their enemy had defeated them, namely material power alone. And so they directed all their efforts, even if after a long delay and a long time, to taking hold of these material causes. But they will not reach, and will never reach, the desired goal, which is overcoming their enemy and defeating them, unless they add to these material causes the taking hold of the religious causes, which we may perhaps call spiritual causes, as is said in some of the terminology of the present age. That is what our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) has guaranteed in the previous verse, and our Prophet (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) explained it in more than one authentic hadith. Among them is the previous hadith, namely his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 3462Sahih (Al-Albani). And among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): . There are other hadiths that may specify a part of the details of these two authentic hadiths, such as the hadith that Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a plow and said (peace and blessings be upon him): . This is taken from the previous hadith: , and so on. And this third hadith is an allusion to the eagerness to pursue material earnings. Perhaps also from that, or from those hadiths, is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): , or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Therefore, it is obligatory for all Muslims who are truly eager for their glory and their ancient honor to return to Allah. Returning to Allah is not just a phrase used to stir emotions and move souls, and then nothing happens after that except that these souls remain in their places, in the manner of the known military system in some countries, "stay in your place," in motion and effort, but there is no progress. Why? Because we have not taken hold of two causes upon which victory over the enemies of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) depends. The first cause is knowledge, and the other cause is acting upon the knowledge. And each of them requires reminding of very, very important matters. And the matter is as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-A'raf 7:187]. As for knowledge, it is of two types: beneficial knowledge, and knowledge that I do not now say is harmful, I do not now say it is harmful knowledge, but at least I say it is non-beneficial knowledge. So what is beneficial knowledge? There is no doubt that the answer will be agreed upon when this knowledge is presented to people in a general way, such as saying that beneficial knowledge is what Allah said, what the Messenger of Allah said; because Muslims never differ that the religious knowledge is what is taken from the Book and the Sunnah. But is this generality in expression and in drawing people's attention today sufficient to draw the attention of Muslims to the fact that the causes of victory are limited to beneficial knowledge, and then acting upon this knowledge? Is it sufficient to tell people that the knowledge is what Allah said, what the Messenger of Allah said? And this is a word, as we said earlier, in which there is no disagreement in affirming it, and no two goats would butt heads over it, as was said in the old days.
On such an occasion as this, we are usually reminded of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
If you trade by way of 'inah, and take hold of the tails of cattle, and are content with agriculture, and abandon jihad in the cause of Allah, Allah will impose upon you a humiliation that He will not remove from you until you return to your religion.
When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.
The nations will attack you as the diners gather around their food. They said: Will we be few in number at that time, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No, rather you will be many, but you will be like the foam on the surface of a flood. And Allah will remove awe from the hearts of your enemies and cast weakness into your hearts. They said: What is weakness, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Love of this world and hatred of death.
It will not enter the house of anyone but that he will be humiliated.
If you take hold of the tails of cattle and are content with agriculture...
A time will come upon my Ummah in which a person will not care from which path he eats, whether from what is lawful or from what is forbidden.
يأتي زمان على أمتي ، لا يُبالي المرء من أي طريقٍ أكل ، أمن الحلال أم من الحرامbut most of the people do not know."
