What is the meaning of *sals al-rih* (incontinence of wind) and its ruling?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Today, I was withThe Shaykh : Muhammad Abu 'Adi is sitting in a session, and according to my knowledge, he has urinary incontinence today. I had not heard the term *sals al-rih* (incontinence of wind) before this time, so I said I would ask what the meaning of *sals al-rih* is, if this term exists.

The Shaykh : This is one of the diseases. It may be a real disease, or it may be an imagined one. As for the real disease, perhaps every one of us may sometimes be affected by it as a result of a type of food that entered his stomach.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So a gas is released with him. Naturally, if this continues with him from time to time, like urinary incontinence, he is classified among those who have an excuse.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And the second one, which is the imagined one, nothing comes out of them, but because of the illusion they may be subjected to due to the whispering of Satan to them. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a hadith narrated by al-Bukhari that when a person stands to pray, Satan comes and whispers to him, taking a hair from his rear and pulling it, and making him think that something has come out of him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, as advice and instruction for his Ummah:
So let him not leave until he finds wind or hears a sound. فلا ينصرفن حتى يجد ريحا أو يسمع صوتا
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 1:514
This is an illusion, whereas that is a reality.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, the Muslim should be mindful of himself and pay attention to whether it is a reality, due to being affected by some foods, that this wind comes out of him. In that case, if it is frequent, as we mentioned, like one who has urinary incontinence, he must not pray until he performs wudu for every prayer. And if it is the other type, which happens frequently to some people, he should drive away the whispering of Satan from his mind and not leave his prayer. Rather, I say, he should not rule his wudu invalid unless he finds wind or hears a sound. This is the answer.
