The questioner : I hope the Shaykh will be kind enough to clarify the correct manner of performing the prayer of the one who joins late, specifically for one who catches the fourth rak'ah of a four-rak'ah prayer or the third rak'ah of the Maghrib prayer, regarding the order of the missed rak'ahs and the surahs recited. This is because I have noticed a lot of confusion among a group of young men on this point. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : The manner of making up the prayer, the making up of the prayer by the one who joins late, is that he builds upon what he caught as the beginning of his prayer. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and pray whatever you get (with the people) and complete the rest which you have missed ما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
Sahih al-Bukhari 635
So the one who joins late makes up his prayer as a completion of his first prayer, and the completion is built upon what preceded it. If a person catches the last rak'ah of a four-rak'ah prayer, he begins by reciting al-Fatihah, then recites a surah with it if he is able. When the imam concludes the prayer, he stands and performs a rak'ah in which he recites al-Fatihah and whatever is easy of the Qur'an, then bows and prostrates the two prostrations. Then he sits for the first tashahhud, then stands and prays the remaining two rak'ahs with al-Fatihah only. If he catches the last rak'ah of the Maghrib prayer, he does as I mentioned: he begins by reciting al-Fatihah and whatever is easy if he is able to do so. Then when the imam concludes the prayer, he stands and performs the first rak'ah, reciting in it al-Fatihah and a surah or whatever is easy of the Qur'an. Then he sits for the first tashahhud, then stands and prays the third rak'ah with al-Fatihah of the Book only. This is the manner, that is, the manner of making up the prayer by the one who joins late, which the Sunnah requires. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. This listener, Taha al-Sudani, says.
