The questioner : What is the ruling in the Shari'ah, O honorable Shaykh, in your view, regarding a woman who weans her child before completing two years?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment:
There is no blame on a woman for weaning her child before the completion of two years if the child is self-sufficient without milk. However, if the child is not self-sufficient without milk, it is not permissible for her to wean him before the two years, nor after the two years, as long as he does not eat food. This is because the objective is to nourish the child. If he needs milk, it is obligatory that he be nourished with it. If he becomes self-sufficient through eating and drinking, there is no blame in cutting off the milk before the completion of the two years.
