The ruling on decorating verses, hanging them on walls, and adorning houses with them.

The questioner : Sometimes people write verses in the shape of a pitcher, making it like a coffee pot, writing the verses... a person, an image of a bird.

The Shaykh : Yes, this is also one of the calamities of the times. In truth, writing verses in a normal way and placing them on signs or in frames and hanging them on the wall is also not part of the Sunnah in any way. In reality, there are many things that are hidden from people due to the malice of Satan toward the children of Adam. He whispers to the human being that writing a verse and hanging it on the wall is a form of honoring the Noble Qur'an, but that is not the case. Honoring the Noble Qur'an is by memorizing it for those who have been granted a good memory, and at least by applying it, not by decorating walls with verses and surahs. So Satan suggests to the children of Adam that if you place the verse in a prominent place, this indicates your faith in Allah and your honoring of the verses of Allah. But on the other hand, he whispers to him that there is no necessity to act upon such a verse, whereas the Qur'an was revealed to be acted upon, as the Exalted said:
To warn whoever is alive and justify the word against the disbelievers. لتنذر من كان حيا ويحق القول على الكافرين
[Ya-Sin 36:70]
Look, for example, at many, and very many, houses where a verse is hung,
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. ومن يتق الله يجعل له مخرجا ويرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
and you find its owner engaging in riba (usury or interest), perhaps selling what Allah has forbidden, and the like. What is the benefit of hanging this verse when it says
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. ومن يتق الله يجعل له مخرجا ويرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
and your heart is empty of this verse, you do not feel it, and consequently you do not act upon it? So if the verse is written in a form that represents, for example, as I mentioned earlier, a pitcher, or represents a forbidden image, the violation of the Shari'ah increases. And the final word is that it is not permissible to play with the verses, nor is it permissible to write them in a decorated manner such that it becomes difficult for most people, if the verse is not known or memorized by them, to decipher the letters because of the abundance of ornamentation, diacritics, and decorations introduced into the verse.
