The Shaykh : Among the characteristics of the Friday prayer is that it is not performed except in homelands, in cities and villages, unlike the other prayers which are valid in any place. The Friday prayer in homelands and villages is correct. The evidence for this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to travel long journeys, and the Friday prayer would pass him by, yet he did not perform it while traveling. If the Friday prayer had been obligatory upon the traveler, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have performed it. And marvel at the fact that the Day of 'Arafah in the Farewell Pilgrimage fell on a Friday, and yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform the Friday prayer on the Day of 'Arafah, as in the long hadith of Jabir narrated by Muslim Thus said Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Indeed, he has gone astray who says that the Friday prayer is performed while traveling, and he has departed from the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If he does so, he must repeat it if he wants to clear his conscience and establish his case before Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because this is not a matter of independent legal reasoning where it could be said that there is no blame in matters of independent legal reasoning. The Sunnah in this is clearer than the sun at its zenith. No one has an excuse to perform the Friday prayer while traveling, absolutely. However, if you happen to be in a town where you have stopped and you intend to continue your journey at the end of the day, it is obligatory for you to pray with the Muslims, because Allah says: [Al-Jumu'ah 62:9] And is the traveler from among the believers or from among the non-believers? From among the believers, so the address includes him.
