The questioner : I am a student in my fifteenth year of age, and I want to stock up on righteous deeds so that I may win the Garden of Delight, and I want to voluntarily fast on Mondays and Thursdays. I informed my mother and sought her permission to fast on Mondays and Thursdays, but she did not agree. She told me, "When you get married, fast with your husband." I proposed this matter to her several times, but she did not agree. My question is: Is there a sin against her if I fast on Mondays and Thursdays, or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : First, we direct our words to the mother who prevented you from doing good. We advise her not to prevent you from doing good, because if you do good, it does not harm her, and it is beneficial for you. Perhaps you will supplicate to Allah for her when you break your fast, and Allah may accept your supplication. It is not befitting for parents to prevent their children, whether male or female, from doing good; rather, it is befitting for them to encourage them to do good and to help them in it.
As for you, there is no blame on you if you fast, provided you fulfill what is required of you regarding serving your mother and other duties, and provided there is no harm to you. However, if it is possible to manage things so that you fast without her noticing, that is better and more excellent. But I hope that after hearing these words, the mother will not prevent you from fasting and will make the matter easy for you.
