I got up to pray the Fajr prayer, but the mu'adhdhin had not yet called to prayer. When I finished my prayer, I heard the adhan. Do I have to repeat the prayer, or what should I do?

The questioner : May the Shaykh be respected, I got up to pray the Fajr prayer, but the mu'adhdhin had not yet called to prayer. When I finished and prayed the prayer, I heard the adhan. Do I have to repeat the prayer, or what should I do?

The Shaykh : This questioner is asking about a prayer he performed before its time, which is the Fajr prayer. He got up from sleep, prayed, and then after finishing the prayer, he heard the Fajr adhan. Our answer to this is to say:
A prayer performed before its time does not suffice for the obligatory prayer, but you have not been deprived of the reward. You receive the reward for it as a voluntary prayer. However, it is obligatory for you to repeat the obligatory prayer. If you have already repeated it, that is what is required. If you have not repeated it, it is obligatory for you to repeat it.
Here is a point or question regarding this question: From what I understood, the brother did not intend to pray in the mosque. So I do not know if he is sick or excused by another excuse from leaving the congregation, or if this is his habit?
If it is the latter, I advise him to repent to Allah and to maintain the prayer with the congregation, because the heaviness of the prayers with the congregation is a characteristic of the hypocrites, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the 'Isha' prayer and the Fajr prayer. If only they knew what (reward) there is in them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl. أثقل الصلوات على المنافقين صلاة العشاء وصلاة الفجر، ولو يعلمون ما فيهما لأتوهما ولو حبواً
Sunan Ibn Majah 797Sahih (Darussalam)
.
Furthermore, by exposing himself to imitating the hypocrites in leaving the congregational prayer, he misses out on much good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Prayer said in a congregation is twenty-seven degrees more excellent than prayer said by a single person. صلاة الجماعة أفضل من صلاة الفذ بسبع وعشرين درجة
Sahih Muslim 650a
It is not wisdom or intelligence for a person to miss this great profit out of laziness and negligence.
We know that people today travel long distances and cross deserts and wastelands just to obtain a ten percent profit in this world. Yet this great profit, in which one is multiplied by twenty-seven, and which is greater than what a person imagines and is more lasting, is left behind because of laziness and negligence.
I advise my brother the questioner and my brothers the listeners to maintain the congregational prayer, for that is better for them, if only they knew.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
