The questioner : A woman used an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) for several months, which caused her menstrual period to be prolonged, typically lasting seven days, and in this noble month, the period was extended to fifteen days. Does she fast and pray on these extra days?
The Shaykh : Women’s problems in the present day are endless. One uses an IUD and her period increases, while another uses pills and her cycle becomes disrupted. There are many problems. If women had remained with the nature that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created them with, they would have been free from these problems, and the scholars would have been free from their problems as well. But they started using these pills and these IUDs, and a great problem arose. The IUD, according to what we have heard from women, is a cause for prolonging the duration of menstruation. So if a woman’s custom is, for example, six days, it becomes eight or ten. We tell this woman: as long as the menstruation is present, you are menstruating, unless it exceeds the majority of the time, in which case it becomes irregular non-menstrual bleeding. In that case, she sits, then returns to sitting for the duration of her original menstruation, and then she performs the full ritual bath and prays, and there is no blame on her.
The questioner : May Allah reward you.
