The questioner : She says that she is a married woman living in her husband's family home, and there are her husband's brothers in the house. She says: "When I am working inside the kitchen, for example, my husband's brothers come and enter the kitchen, take what they want, and then leave. I am wearing the prescribed Islamic covering except for my hands, which I expose so that I can work. Is there any sin on me for that?"
The Shaykh : There is no sin on you for exposing your hands for work in the presence of your husband's brothers, because this is something that pressing need calls for and it is difficult to guard against. And Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Hajj 22:78].
Unless there is a fear of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) accompanying this, such as if the husband's brothers look at her hands with a deliberate gaze that is feared to contain a hazard. In this case, it is not permissible for her to expose her hands in front of her husband's brothers.
As for one of them entering upon her while she is in the kitchen, if the kitchen is open, meaning it is open and in the middle of the seated people present, then there is nothing wrong with it.
However, if the kitchen is in a corner of the house and has a door, it is not permissible for him to be alone with her, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1171Sahih (Darussalam) They said: "O Messenger of Allah! What do you say about the in-laws?" He said: meaning that he is the calamity from which one must flee, just as a person loves to flee from death.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
