Explaining the Meanings of Surat al-Fatihah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And, unfortunately, if we were to ask many Muslims today about much of the Qur'an, about the meaning of the verses, what would they say? They do not know the meaning. If an exam were held right now on explaining the meanings of al-Fatihah, which you recite every day in every prayer, asking what these words and verses mean, you would find that many of those present do not understand but a very little. Do you want us to conduct a test now? Answer. Perhaps, perhaps. All right, a question:
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
A phrase that the servant utters and the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, answers him with. So with what does Allah, Mighty and Majestic, answer him? Yes.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Well done, may Allah reward you. Listen, my brother. You are standing in prayer, saying
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
Lord of the heavens and the earth. He says to you: "My servant has praised Me". Glory to Allah! Every reciter, in any place, in any spot, standing in prayer, saying
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
, Allah the Exalted says to him: "My servant has praised Me".
And when he says
The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
, what does Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say? Go ahead. What does He say?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : No, that is a mistake. Rest. Yes.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : He says: "My servant has praised Me". May Allah reward you.
And when he says
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
[Al-Fatihah 1:4]
?
The student: He says, "My servant has glorified Me."

The Shaykh : He says: "My servant has glorified Me"? Perfect. Rest.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : And when he says
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]
? Yes, go ahead. He says this:
into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks
Sahih Muslim 395a
All right, wait, wait. Where is the half that belongs to the servant, and where is the half that belongs to Allah?
You alone we worship
belongs to Allah, and
And You alone we ask for help
belongs to the servant. The pronoun refers to Allah in both instances in "You alone." But the matter of worship is exclusively for Allah, and seeking help is the portion of the created being. He seeks help from Allah, and Allah helps him. All right.
When he says
Guide us to the straight path -
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
to the end of the surah, with what does Allah answer him?
The student:
This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.
Sahih Muslim 395a

The Shaykh : Well done. He said:
This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.
Sahih Muslim 395a
Be honest with me. When we recite this verse while we are praying, this surah while we are praying, do we keep these noble meanings in mind? Yes, sometimes we do. In reality, I am speaking about myself, and I am more deficient than you. Sometimes a person keeps these meanings in mind, and sometimes he does not. And what should be done is for us to keep them in mind so that we become humble, so that a person believes that he is conversing with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about those who pray:
Each of you is conversing with his Lord
