I have a sum of money that I saved to buy land on which to build a house, and a lunar year has passed over it, but I have not yet found land to buy. Is there zakah on this money?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you. The questioner says: I have a sum of money that I saved to buy land on which to build a house, and a lunar year has passed over it, but I have not yet found land to buy. Is there zakah on this money?

The Shaykh : Yes, zakah is due on it, because whenever dirhams and dinars are in a person's possession for any purpose, zakah is due on them. Similarly, a young man who saves money in order to get married has zakah due on it. Know, O Muslim brother, that zakah is not a burden, but rather a profitable gain for the person and a blessing in the wealth. Indeed, charity, meaning zakah, does not mix with wealth except that it destroys it, and charity does not diminish wealth. So do not be stingy with yourself, O my brother. Pay the zakah and ask Allah for immediate replacement, for Allah says:
But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] - He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers." وما أنفقتم من شيء فهو يخلفه وهو خير الرازقين
