Explanation of the Book of Ablution, Ghusl, Menstruation, and Tayammum-02b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Abu al-Zinad from al-A'raj from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone of you performs ablution he should put water in his nose and then blow it out and whoever cleans his private parts with stones should do so with odd numbers. And whoever wakes up from his sleep should wash his hands before putting them in the water for ablution, because nobody knows where his hands were during sleep.
Sahih al-Bukhari 162
.

The Shaykh : This hadith contains several issues:
First: His saying:
he should put water in his nose and then blow it out
Sahih al-Bukhari 162
In some versions it is:
he should snuff up water in his nose and eject mucus
Sunan Abi Dawud 140Sahih (Al-Albani)
which is clearer than this version, and the discussion of this has already been mentioned.
And when one of you uses the miswak, let him make it odd in number.
Likewise, the discussion of this has already been mentioned.
And whoever wakes up from his sleep should wash his hands before putting them in the water for ablution, because nobody knows where his hands were during sleep.
Sahih al-Bukhari 162
, this wording does not include:
Let him wash his hand three times.
but it has been established in the two Sahihs that he said:
Let him wash his hand three times before putting them in the vessel, for one of you does not know where his hand spent the night.
and the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding this reasoning: is it a reasoning for a physical matter, a spiritual matter, or a devotional matter?
Some of them said that it is a reasoning for a physical matter, and based on that, they held that if a person puts his hands in a bag or something similar when he sleeps, it is not obligatory for him to wash them before putting them in the vessel, because now he knows where his hand spent the night. But if he did not do so, his hand might wander over his body, or it might come into contact with something impure, such as blood, urine, feces, or the like.
And some of them said that it is reasoned by a spiritual matter, which is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated in his saying:
When one of you awakes from sleep and performs ablution he must clear his nose three times, for the devil spends the night in the interior of his nose.
Mishkat al-Masabih 392, 393, 394
He said this is similar to it, for Satan might play with his hands and attach harm or damage to them. Therefore, it is forbidden to dip his hands in the vessel until he washes them three times. This was hinted at by the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), and it is reasonable and clear.
The third opinion is that it is not reasoned, but is a devotional act, and this is the well-known position of the school of thought. They said, and based on that, if he puts his hands in a cover, he must wash them. But there is a consideration in this opinion, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) provided a reason, saying:
For one of you...
and this is clear in the reasoning, so it is not possible to negate this cause.
And the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding if one wakes up from a daytime sleep: does the ruling apply in this case or not?
Some of them said that it applies, due to the generality of his saying:
When anyone of you wakes up from sleep
Sunan Ibn Majah 394Sahih (Darussalam)
which includes sleep at night and during the day. And the reasoning:
for you do not know where your hands have spent the night.
Muwatta Malik 2:7
is a reasoning for some instances of this generality, and this does not necessitate specification.
But what appears is that it is specific to sleep at night, because the dominance of jinn, insects, and wild animals and the like is more prevalent at night than during the day.
