Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Muhammad, who is Ibn Salam, narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Wahhab informed us, saying: Khalid al-Hadha informed us from Abu Qilabah from Anas ibn Malik, who said: When the people increased, they suggested that they should indicate the time of prayer with something recognizable. They suggested lighting a fire or striking a bell. So [the Prophet] ordered Bilal to make the adhan even-numbered and the iqamah odd-numbered.
