The reader: Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Malik ibn Anas narrated to us from Hisham ibn 'Urwah from his father from Aishah, the Mother of the Believers, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during his illness: Sahih al-Bukhari 716 Aishah said: I said, "If Abu Bakr stands in your place, the people will not hear because of the weeping. So order 'Umar to lead." He said: Sahih al-Bukhari 7303 Aishah said to Hafdah: "Tell him that if Abu Bakr stands in your place, the people will not hear because of the weeping. So order 'Umar to lead the people in prayer." Hafdah did so, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 679 Hafdah said to Aishah: "I was not going to get any good from you."
The Shaykh : This hadith passed before us in its wording previously, and the point of it is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not rebuke Aishah for what she said about her father, that the people would not hear because of the weeping. If the imam's weeping during prayer had been something that invalidates the prayer or diminishes it, he would have said, "Do not weep," for weeping is not befitting. However, it is said that weeping is of two types: a type that is forced, and a type that comes naturally. The first is prohibited, as some imams do, especially in the night prayer of Ramadan; you find them weeping, and when they weep, they make a great sound in order to make the people weep, and this is an error. But if the weeping comes naturally without forcing, then there is no doubt that it is a sign of the softness of the heart. A person sometimes finds that he reads the Qur'an and finds softness in his heart and weeping, and sometimes he reads the same verses he read previously and his heart does not move. For the heart—we ask Allah to keep us and you firm with the firm word—the heart is between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful, and it does not remain on one tune, until some of them said:
Man was not named "man" (al-insan) except for his forgetfulness, and the heart not except that it turns over.
We ask Allah to keep our hearts and yours firm upon His obedience.
Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer
مروا أبا بكر يصل بالناسOrder Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer
مروا أبا بكر فليصل للناسKeep quiet! You are verily the Companions of Joseph. Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer.
