Explanation of the Book of the Adhan-06a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Isma'il ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Husayn narrated to us from Zayd ibn Aslam from 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umar, who said: Abu Burdah narrated to me from Abu Musa, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, and his illness became severe. He said:
Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. مروا أبا بكر فليصل بالناس
Sahih al-Bukhari 682
Aisha said: "He is a gentle man; if he takes your place, he will not be able to lead the people in prayer." He said:
Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. مروا أبا بكر فليصل بالناس
Sahih al-Bukhari 682
She returned and said:
You order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer, and added: You are like the female companions of Yusuf. مري أبا بكر فليصل بالناس فإنكن صواحب يوسف
Sahih Muslim 420
The messenger came to him, and he led the people in prayer during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. If someone asks from where it is taken that this hadith matches the chapter title, "The chapter on the people of knowledge and virtue being more deserving of leading the prayer"?
The students: His saying, "Order Abu Bakr..."

The Shaykh : Here, circular reasoning is entailed if we say that he appointed him as imam because he is the most virtuous, for it would be asked: what is the evidence that he is the most virtuous? And the answer would be: he appointed him as imam, which entails circular reasoning.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : That is, it is said that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) has established virtue in many places other than this, and therefore the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed him as the one who leads the people in prayer. Another answer is to say that Abu Bakr's virtue became well-known among the Companions in general, and they knew that he was the best of the Ummah after its Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
