The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: "And Your Hands to the Elbows"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :
wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows اغسلوا وجوهكم وأيديكم إلى المرافق
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
Where does the beginning start? From the tips of the fingers, because this hand, this hand right now, is entirely a hand. The end is the elbow. So it is obligatory in wudu' to wash the hand from the tips of the fingers to the elbow. Pay attention to this point, because some people, when they wash their hand, wash only the forearm after the face and leave the palm. This is a great error. If you did that, your wudu' would not be valid, and your prayer would not be valid. You must wash the hand from the tips of the fingers to the elbow. Now, is the elbow included or not? The elbow is included, because it is established in Sahih Muslim from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah:
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu' and washed his forearms until he reached the upper arm أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم توضأ فغسل ذراعيه حتى أشرع في العضد
meaning that he washed up to the upper arm. So the elbow is included. And likewise for the left hand. He said:
and your forearms to the elbows وأيديكم إلى المرافق
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
"And where is the elbow?" I said, "This one." Now, let us ask the young man who is in front of me, "Where is the wrist?" Yes, this one? He says, "This is the wrist." Yes, good. What is this? Good. Where is the ulna? Hmm, Allah knows best. May Allah reward you. We have a common saying among the ignorant people who do not know, they say: "He does not know his wrist from his ulna". This is what I know, and you say, "He does not know his wrist from his radius." Anyway, they say the bone now, the forearm, its end, meaning there is no bone between it and the palm, there are two bones, one on the right side, this side, and this side. The middle bone next to the thumb is the wrist, and the bone next to the little finger is the ulna, and the carpus is the middle between them. As for the radius, it is the bone next to the big toe of the foot. And I recite for you a verse about this so that you do not forget. He says, the two verses:
"And the bone next to the thumb is the wrist, and what is next *** to the little finger is the ulna, and the carpus is the middle
And the bone next to the big toe of the foot is called the radius *** So hold fast to knowledge and beware of error"

Beware of making the wrist an ulna or the ulna a wrist. Yes, beware of error. Now, if you wash the hand, from where to where? From the tips of the fingers to the elbow.
