Etiquette of Following the Funeral Procession and Offering Condolences?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Also, it is recommended that when we finish making du'a for the deceased in the manner that was reported, we should return to our homes, and the family of the deceased should return to their homes. They should not open their doors for condolences, sit for them, or make it a festival like a wedding with lights, tents, and chairs. All of this is religious innovation (bid'ah). Some of our later brothers even said that this is adopted from non-Muslims, because they are the ones who do this to drive away their sadness through these gatherings. But the Sunnah is that we do not open a door, nor do we sit for anyone. If someone meets us in the market or in the mosque, let him offer condolences, and if he does not meet us, offering condolences is not obligatory.
Then, the best way to offer condolences is in the form that was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent for by one of his daughters to attend to one of her children who was on the verge of death. The woman's messenger came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him to attend. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Tell her to be patient and count on the reward, for to Allah belongs what He has taken and to Him belongs what He has left. مرها فلتصبر ولتحتسب فإن لله ما أخذ وله ما أبقى
Glorified and Exalted is He
that whatever Allah takes is His, and whatever He gives is His, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world) فإن لله ما أخذ وله ما أبقى وكل شي عنده بأجل مسمى
Sahih al-Bukhari 7377
. Allah is the Greatest. How great this form of condolence is! This is better than people saying, "May Allah magnify your reward, improve your consolation, and forgive your deceased." This last form is undoubtedly good, but the form reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is better and more excellent. I say it a second time:
Tell her to be patient and seek reward, for Allah has taken what He took and kept what He kept, and everything with Him is by a specified term. مرها فلتصبر ولتحتسب فإن لله ما أخذ وله ما أبقى وكل شيء عنده بأجل مسمى
Let her be patient and count on the reward from Allah and the recompense for this patience. Indeed, to Allah belongs what He has taken, meaning the deceased, and to Him belongs what He has left, meaning the living. And everything with Him is by a specified term. So the death decreed for this person will not be advanced nor delayed. Allah the Exalted said:
and no soul perceives in what land it will die وما تدري نفس بأي أرض تموت
[Luqman 31:34]
And two stories have occurred that are among the signs of Allah. The first: One whom I trust told me: We came to Mecca as pilgrims on camels before cars came. When we returned and entered the famous mountains, one of our men’s mother had fallen ill. At the end of the night, we departed, and this man remained to prepare a bed for his mother so she could ride on a soft bed because of her illness. The pilgrims moved ahead, and when he walked, he lost the way in these mountains. He said, "I went with these valleys and these mountains looking for the pilgrims. When the sun rose and the weather became hot, I saw a desert tent. Do you know what a tent is? It is a small tent. I went to it, greeted them, and asked them where the way was. They said, 'The way is behind you, far away. But sit, we will milk the camel, and sit until the time cools down and you can walk.' He said, 'So I tethered the camel and dismounted his mother. And from the moment she dismounted on this land, Allah took her soul. Allah is the Greatest. She was from al-Qassim, and she had performed Hajj and returned, and she died in a land he never dreamed he would come to. But Allah guided her to the land He willed for her to die in. Glorified is the Great Allah. This is among the signs of Allah."
The second story: That a person does not know when he will die. It happened that a tank, which I think is known, with two riders on it, met a car coming from the intersection. When the car approached the market from which the tank had come, the car stopped, wanting the driver to pass. What? To cross the tank. And the tank stopped, wanting the car to pass. Within seconds, the tank moved forward and the car driver moved forward, and they collided. The rear rider on the tank died. Look at the lesson: how these moments were delayed until his term was fulfilled. He did not move quickly so the car would run him over, but this one stopped and this one stopped. And when the specified term came, each moved toward the other, and the accident happened. All of this indicates what Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
And everything with Him is by due measure. كل شيء عنده بمقدار
[Ar-Ra'd 13:8]
and what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world) كل شيء عنده بأجل مسمى
Sahih al-Bukhari 7377
This is the prescribed condolence. If you see a person distressed and sad over his deceased, be gentle with him and say, "My brother, be patient and count on the reward. Indeed, to Allah belongs what He has taken and to Him belongs what He has left, and everything with Him is by a specified term." There is no harm in adding, for example, "This is the state of the world. Have you seen anyone who was immortalized? Did not our fathers, brothers, and sons die?" and similar matters that strengthen him in patience.
As for opening doors for people, lighting up the places, and setting up tents, all of this is religious innovation (bid'ah). I hope my brothers, the students of knowledge, will clarify this to people and call people to leave it, but with wisdom and gentleness. And we must know that matters that have remained among people are not easily removed from them by command. Rather, it requires intention, sincerity, counting on reward, and truthfulness with Allah the Mighty and Majestic until these matters, which have no basis in the Shari'ah, are removed.
