The questioner : The questioner used the initials M.S. for her name. She says: May Allah the Mighty and Majestic honor us by entering us into the religion of Islam, me and some of my brothers. My question is: What are the rights of disbelieving parents over their Muslim children, and likewise siblings and relatives, in terms of visiting, financial maintenance, and maintaining ties? When is financial maintenance obligatory, and when is it recommended? May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for the Muslim child toward his parents to be dutiful to them in matters pertaining to worldly affairs, based on the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
(14) And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. (15) But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
[Luqman 31:14-15]
Thus, Allah the Exalted commanded us to treat disbelieving parents in this world with kindness, so we provide for them, clothe them, and guide them. At the same time, we invite them to Islam, perhaps Allah will cast faith into their hearts so that they become Muslims. The same applies to relatives, meaning those who are not Muslims; it is said that they have a kinship bond that must be maintained, so one maintains the bond and invites this connected relative to Islam, perhaps Allah will open his heart. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
