Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: ((Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Allah the Exalted said:
Allah has set a seal upon their hearts
The sealing means stamping, and its origin is from the seal, which is the ring, because when the statement in a writing is finished, the statement is sealed with the writing, meaning that the matter is concluded. So these are the ones upon whose hearts Allah has set a seal. It is also like a container of dates when it is sealed with red wax, as they say that its matter is concluded.
Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing
Meaning, and He has sealed their hearing. And when the hearts are sealed, they no longer understand, and when the hearing is sealed, it no longer hears in a way that benefits.
He said:
and over their vision is a veilوعلى أبصارهم غشاوة
This is a new sentence. The veil is a covering, so when there is a veil over the eyes, they no longer see. Thus, the three paths of guidance have been sealed: the heart, secondly, the hearing of what is said, and thirdly, the sight of what is seen. So all three doors have been blocked. Allah the Exalted said:
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah
[Al-Jathiyah 45:23]
No one.
So if someone were to ask: Does this sealing have a cause, or is it a trial and test from Allah?
The answer is: It has a cause that Allah made clear in His saying:
And We will turn away their hearts and their eyes just as they refused to believe in it the first time
[Al-An'am 6:110]
and in His saying:
And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
[As-Saf 61:5]
So if you see someone who has gone astray, know that he is the cause of his own misguidance.
And for them is a great punishment.
[Al-Baqarah 2:7]
And for them, meaning for these disbelievers who remained in their disbelief, there is a great punishment, which is the punishment of the Fire. Allah the Exalted magnified it because there is nothing more severe than the punishment of the Fire. May Allah protect us and you from it by His generosity and His bounty. This concludes the discussion of the second category of creation, namely the pure, open disbelievers.
