Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Who made the earth a bed for you and the sky a structure, and sent down water from the sky, thereby bringing forth for you sustenance from the fruits”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you الذي جعل لكم الأرض فراشا والسماء بناء وأنزل من السماء ماء فأخرج به من الثمرات رزقا لكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
This is a matter of enumerating types, or enumerating types of His actions, Mighty and Majestic is He. Allah made the earth a bed for us, a level surface upon which a person settles completely; it is not uneven, nor is it painful when one sleeps on it, rests on it, or does something similar. Allah the Exalted has described the earth with multiple descriptions, describing it as a bed, as a level surface, and with other descriptions found in the Qur'an. As we know, a bed is a level surface prepared for a person to rest in.
And the sky a structure والسماء بناء
As Allah the Exalted said:
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens] وبنينا فوقكم سبعا شدادا
[An-Naba 78:12]
Allah made the sky a structure, meaning in the position of a structure and in the position of a ceiling.
And We made the sky a protected ceiling وجعلنا السماء سقفا محفوظا
[Al-Anbya 21:32]
sent down from the sky, rainوأنزل من السماء ماء
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
sent down from the skyأنزل من السماء
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
It is not the first sky, but the second sky refers to the height, because the water, which is rain, descends from the clouds. Allah the Exalted said:
Do you not see that Allah drives clouds? Then He brings them together, then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. الم تر أن الله يزجي سحابا ثم يؤلف بينه ثم يجعله ركاما فترى الودق يخرج من خلاله
[An-Nur 24:43]
So the water, which is rain, does not descend from the sky that is the structure, but rather from the clouds which are in the height. By this, we know that "sky" is used with two meanings: the first meaning is the structure above us, and the second meaning is the height.
and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for youفأخرج به من الثمرات رزقا لكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
Bringing forth by itأخرج به
Meaning by its cause. Look at the wisdom or the exquisite point where He attributed the action to Himself, Exalted and Majestic is He, but by its cause. The cause is merely a connector; otherwise, does the rain bring forth the plants? No, the One who brings them forth is Allah, but the cause is the rain.
So bring forth by itفاخرج به
Meaning by its cause.
fruits as provision for youمن الثمرات رزقا لكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
And "fruits" is plural because they are varied; if a person wanted to count their types, he would be unable to do so, let alone their individual instances.
