Benefits of the Verse: “Who made the earth a bed for you and the sky a structure, and sent down water from the sky, thereby bringing forth for you sustenance from the fruits. So do not set up rivals for Allah while you know.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Exalted said, expressing His grace and reminding His servants:
[He] who made for you the earth a bed
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
The following benefits are derived from this noble verse: It clarifies the mercy and wisdom of Allah the Exalted in making the earth a bed. Had He made it rough and hard, humans would not have been able to settle upon it, and no one would have been guided. But out of His mercy, gentleness, and kindness, He made it a bed. Another benefit of the noble verse is making the sky a structure. But what is our benefit in the sky being a structure? Our benefit in the sky being a structure is that through it we know the power of Allah, Glory and Exaltation be Him, because this sky that encompasses the entire earth from all sides, we know that it is very large and vast, as Allah the Exalted said:
And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:47]
. Another benefit of the noble verse is the clarification of the power of Allah, Glory and Exaltation be Him, in sending down rain from the sky, as He said:
sent down from the sky, rain
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
If all creation were to gather to create a single drop of water, they would not be able to do so, yet Allah the Exalted sends down this great rain in an instant, is that not so? Yes. And there is the story of the man who entered while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the Friday sermon, and he said:
“Call upon Allah to send us relief.” So he raised his hands and said, “O Allah, send us relief,” and he did not finish the sermon until the rain was pouring down from his beard.
. Another benefit of the noble verse is the wisdom and mercy of Allah the Exalted in sending down rain from the sky. The point is that if the water that brings life to the earth were to flow on the surface of the earth, it would harm people. And if it were to flow on the surface of the earth, many lands would be deprived of it. What are the lands that would be deprived? The elevated ones, to which nothing would come. But among the blessings of Allah is that He sends it down from the sky. Also, there is another thing: it is sent down as *raddad*, meaning drop by drop. If it were to come down like the mouths of water skins, it would harm people, but out of the mercy of Allah, Glory and Exaltation be Him, it is sent down in a manner that is not harmful to you. Another benefit of the noble verse is the affirmation of causes, as He said:
and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you
[Al-Baqarah 2:22]
. And among its benefits is that causes do not become a cause except by the will of Allah, as He said:
Thereby bringing forth
.
