A sick woman who passed away with five obligatory prayers remaining due to her inability: what is the obligation regarding her?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
May Allah guide you and protect you, O honorable Shaykh.
The Shaykh : And you likewise.
The questioner : This woman passed away, but she did not perform some of the obligatory prayers, approximately five or six of them. Although she was mentally aware, she was unable to stand or sit. They would bring her earth to perform dry ablution, but she was unable to do so. Even at the end of the time, when she was praying, she would increase the takbirs and other phrases, yet she was not mentally present. So what is required of her, may Allah guide you?
The Shaykh : She owes nothing now, meaning the prayer is not made up on her behalf. However, her children and relatives should increase their seeking of forgiveness for her and their supplication for her. On this occasion, I would like to point out an issue that some sick people resort to. First, we say that a sick person must purify himself with water. If he is unable to do so, he purifies himself with earth. If he is unable to do that, he prays without earth or water, and he does not abandon the prayer.
Second: He must pray standing. If he is unable to do so, he prays sitting. If he is unable to do that, he prays on his side. If he is unable to make gestures or pray on his side, he intends it in his heart and does not abandon the prayer.
Third: Some people, when there is impurity in their clothes and they are unable to wash it or change the garment, say, "I will not pray until Allah heals me and I purify my garment." This is also a mistake. Rather, he prays even if his garment is impure, and even if his body is impure, provided he is unable to remove the impurity. He prays according to his condition, because the prayer has a limited time in which it must be performed according to a person's ability. As Allah the Exalted said:[At-Taghabun 64:16] I hope that this is known to you and that you point it out in gatherings, because most people are preoccupied with this matter. Also, when you visit the sick, ask them how they pray and how they purify themselves, and guide them to what is obligatory. This is because a person is responsible for the knowledge that Allah has given him, as Allah the Exalted said: [Ali 'Imran 3:187] Do not say, "Where is the covenant?" We find that scholars do not say that Allah took a covenant from us, meaning they do not preclude this. But we say that the mere giving of knowledge by Allah to a person is a covenant. If Allah gives you knowledge, this means the covenant is to make it clear to the people. This is among Allah's blessings upon the servant, making him a place for knowledge and an inheritor of the message. For Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Al-An'am 6:124] So whoever Allah finds good in, He grants him understanding in his religion, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1037a So my advice to myself and to you is to be diligent in spreading knowledge among the people and not to belittle anything. If you teach a person one issue and he acts upon it, and then he teaches another, and another, and another, then all the reward obtained from the action that you guided the people to is for you, just as if you had done it. Yes.
May Allah guide you and protect you, O honorable Shaykh.
