Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
His EminenceThe Shaykh : If a person dies without having performed the Hajj of Islam, and his son performs Hajj on his behalf, meaning after the Hajj of Islam for the living, this is a Hajj for his father or mother, three or four Hajjs, and then someone comes to deny it, saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not guide to performing many Hajjs for the deceased, what is your opinion?

The Shaykh : I agree with the one who denied it, and I say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not guide his Ummah to perform Hajj on behalf of the deceased except for the obligatory one, as established in the authentic hadith. Performing Hajj for one's parents as a voluntary act has not been reported at all. However, we do not say that it is forbidden; rather, we say that leaving it is better. And we should know an important issue, which is that supplicating for the deceased is better than giving charity on his behalf, better than performing Hajj for him, and better than sacrificing an animal for him. The evidence for this is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his action discontinues from him except three things, namely, perpetual sadaqah (charity), or the knowledge by which benefit is acquired, or a pious child who prays for him. إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاثة صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Sunan Abi Dawud 2880Sahih (Al-Albani)
and he did not say "or a righteous son who works for him," even though the subject of the hadith is?

The questioner : Supplication?

The Shaykh : No, its subject is the deed
When a man dies, his action discontinues from him except three things, namely, perpetual sadaqah (charity), or the knowledge by which benefit is acquired, or a pious child who prays for him. إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاثة صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Sunan Abi Dawud 2880Sahih (Al-Albani)
and he did not say "or a righteous son who prays for him, or fasts for him, or gives charity for him, or performs Hajj for him" at all. And what some of the common people are now engrossed in is making everything for their parents. If he gives charity, he says it is for the father and mother. If he sacrifices, he says it is for the father and mother. If he performs Hajj, he says it is for the father and mother. This is a mistake. We say that you are now in need of righteous deeds, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has guided you to supplication.

The questioner : Okay, Shaykh, he is now performing 'Umrah as a Tamattu' 'Umrah for Hajj, meaning what does he do in the present time?

The Shaykh : Huh?

The questioner : He performed 'Umrah.

The Shaykh : And did he intend it for his father or his mother?

The questioner : No, it is a Tamattu' 'Umrah for Hajj.

The Shaykh : Yes, but for whom?

The questioner : For his mother.

The Shaykh : Okay, he makes the Hajj for himself.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Unless it is the obligatory one, yes.
