Giving charity on behalf of one’s parents and performing Hajj and 'Umrah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question. Fatwa number ( 16730 )
Q3: My father and mother have passed away, and I perform 'Umrah on their behalf during the noble month of Ramadan. However, some people prefer giving charity on their behalf. What is better?
A3: It is recommended to give charity on behalf of one’s parents and to perform Hajj and 'Umrah on their behalf, as there is evidence for this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
. And if there is a pressing need, charity is better than voluntary Hajj and voluntary 'Umrah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
