The questioner : He mentions in his letter, O esteemed Shaykh, that he is married to his cousin’s daughter and told her, he says, before he traveled not to go to her parents’ home but to stay with his family, especially since her parents do not pray and he fears the children, the questioner’s children, will be influenced by them. Despite this, this wife did not listen and went to her parents’ house to stay with them. At that point, this husband withheld her financial maintenance. He asks: Is I sinful for doing so? Knowing that I told her: If you go to your parents’ home, you will not have any expenses covered?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. Before answering this question, I would like to clarify that it is obligatory for each of the spouses to treat the other with kindness, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
And live with them in kindness وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
It is not permissible for a husband to prevent his wife from going to her parents, or to her relatives, or to her female friends, unless he sees something disliked. If he sees something disliked, there is no blame on him for preventing her, even from visiting her parents, such as if the parents have among them instruments of amusement and the doing of what is wrong that it is not permissible for a person to participate in with them, or if when she goes to her parents they spoil things for him and she returns with a heart different from the one she left with, then he may prevent her from that. Likewise, it is upon the woman to obey her husband if he forbids her from going to someone, because the husband is in the position of a master to his wife. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that women are captives among us, meaning prisoners, and commanded us to fear Allah in their regard.
As for the answer to the question: If what the questioner said is true, meaning that this wife’s parents do not pray and they have some of what is wrong, and that he forbade her from going to them for this reason, then he has prevented her rightfully, and it is not permissible for her to go to her parents. But if there is exaggeration in the matter, then it is obligatory for him to reflect, look, and verify.
As for the financial maintenance: If the woman disobeys her husband in what is obligatory upon her, she is defiant and has no right to maintenance, especially since her husband in this question told her: If you go to your parents, you will have no maintenance. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you and bless you. This is actually a long letter that arrived from Jordan. She did not mention her name in this letter. She says: I hope Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen will benefit me with my questions. May Allah reward him with good. She says.
