What is the ruling on one who extends the days of the festival to three days? And is it permissible to cause pain in them?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Some people extend the days of the festival. Is this extension valid?

The Shaykh : Meaning?

The questioner : I mean, he makes it... I think the days of the festival are just two days, the Festival of Breaking the Fast and the Festival of Sacrifice, but some people add to it and make it four days.

The Shaykh : How so? And what do they add?

The questioner : The festival of the Muslims is two days, the Festival of Sacrifice and the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Some of them make it four days, five days.

The Shaykh : What do they do with these days?

The questioner : They make them a festival.

The Shaykh : Meaning, what?

The questioner : He does on the first day...

The Shaykh : The days of the festival, there is no doubt that the first day is a festival, there is no issue, and the second and third are also a festival, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Leave them دعهما
meaning: the two girls who were singing, he said:
Let them be, for these are days of festival. دعهما فإنها أيام عيد
Sahih Ibn Hibban 47:320
And the word "days" is plural, and the minimum of the plural is three, so there is no harm in a person making all three days a festival, except in one matter, fasting. So if he says: he will not fast on the second and third day of Shawwal, because fasting on them is forbidden like the festival, then this is not permissible. But in Dhu al-Hijjah, it is known that the days of Tashreeq are not permissible to fast on. So if we add three days to the day of the Festival of Sacrifice, it becomes four. And perhaps you mean what people do of celebrations, is that it? Yes, we say: it is three days in the two festivals: the Festival of Sacrifice, and the Festival of Breaking the Fast.
