The questioner : I bought a garment of a certain type, and after wearing it, I realized that it is made of silk. Should I continue wearing it, or give it in charity, or sell it, because silk is forbidden, as I have heard? May Allah reward you with good?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment:
If it becomes clear to you that this garment you were wearing is made of pure, natural silk, then it is not permissible for you to wear it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade men from wearing silk. The prohibition is general and includes both young and old, except for what has been excluded. You bear no sin for what has passed, since you were wearing it without knowing it was made of silk, as Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] Then Allah the Exalted said: .
As for if it is made of artificial silk, or is a mixture of silk and cotton, or silk and wool, and the majority of it is not silk, then there is no blame on you in continuing to wear it. However, it is not permissible for you to sell it, because it may be bought by a man who will wear it, or by a woman who does not change her appearance, and both are forbidden.
On this occasion, I warn our young men in our lands and in other lands against wearing silk. Indeed, silk is for women. A man should be a man of strength and roughness, not a man of softness and gentleness, for softness is for women, given their readiness to adorn themselves for men. A man is not fit for that. So the believer should be grateful for Allah’s blessing upon him and not make it a cause for his sins. Indeed, spending a blessing in what does not please Allah is ingratitude toward the blessing, and ingratitude toward blessings leads to the fear of their removal. Allah the Exalted said:[Ibrahim 14:28-29] And He the Exalted said: [Ibrahim 14:7] And there are many verses in this meaning, namely in warning against ingratitude toward blessings and spending them in what does not please Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
