The questioner : Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ahzab 33:56] And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 1297Sahih (Darussalam) Question: How is the sending of blessings by Allah and His angels upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? And how is the sending of blessings by Allah upon the servant? And if this verse is recited during the prayer, is it obligatory for me to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or should I listen?
The Shaykh : The sending of blessings by Allah the Exalted upon His Messenger, and the sending of blessings by the angels upon His Messenger, means praising Him. Abu al-‘Aliyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The sending of blessings by Allah upon His Messenger is His praise of Him in the highest assembly”. This is the meaning of His saying:[Al-Ahzab 33:56], meaning they praise Him in the highest assembly. As for our sending of blessings upon Him when we say, “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad,” it is our asking Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to praise Him in the highest assembly.
And if this verse passes during the prayer:[Al-Ahzab 33:56], there is no harm in sending blessings upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), and if you do not send blessings upon him, there is no harm in that either:
First: because you are commanded to listen to the recitation of your imam.
And second: because you can intend in your heart that you will send blessings upon him (peace and blessings be upon him) at the places where sending blessings upon him is prescribed.
The conclusion is that if it passes by you while you are in prayer, if you wish, send blessings upon him, and if you wish, do not send blessings upon him.
Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.
