My father is prone to cursing and swearing, to the point that it has become a habit for him, and he is not even aware that he is uttering it, especially when he is angry. Is there an expiation for what comes out of him?

The questioner : My father is prone to cursing and swearing, to the point that it has become a habit for him, and he is not even aware that he is uttering it, especially when he is angry. Is there an expiation for what comes out of him? May Allah pardon us and you. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment:
I say to your father that he must have good character and that he must not get angry, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked by a man: “Advise me, O Messenger of Allah!” He said to him:
Do not get angry لا تغضب
He repeated it several times, saying:
Do not get angry لا تغضب
Al-Bukhari narrated it.
And I say to him: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal:
Shall I not tell you of the basis of all that? ألا أخبرك بملاك ذلك كله
Sunan Ibn Majah 3973Hasan (Darussalam)
He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. Then he took hold of his own tongue and said:
Hold this in check. كف عليك هذا
He said: O Messenger of Allah! Are we to be held accountable for what we speak? He said:
May your mother mourn you, O Mu'adh! What causes people to fall into the Fire on their faces, or he said, on their snouts, except the harvest of their tongues? ثكلتك أمك يا معاذ، وهل يكب الناس في النار على وجوههم أو قال على مناخرهم إلا حصائد ألسنتهم
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 65:415
So my advice and counsel to your father is that he should not get angry, and that he should adorn himself with patience and forbearance. Let him know that the permanence of a state is impossible, and that with hardship comes ease, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
(5) For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (6) Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا * إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
[Ash-Sharh 94:5-6]
.
If anger overtakes him, let him seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Let him sit down if he is standing, and let him lie down if he is sitting. Let him perform ablution until what is in him subsides. Let him know that many of those who get angry, when the anger leaves them and their veins cool down, regret it greatly. Moreover, cursing, swearing, and insulting may only increase a person's sin.
As for you, you must advise your father and advise him repeatedly until he persists in good character.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
