The Reciter: Chapter: The Virtue of Poverty. Isma'il narrated to us, saying: 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Abi Hazim narrated to me from his father from Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi, who said: A man passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to a man sitting with him:
What is your opinion of this man? ما رأيك في هذا
The man, who was from the nobles of the people, said: "By Allah, this man is likely to be married if he proposes, and to have his intercession accepted if he intercedes." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then a man passed by, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
What is your opinion of this man? ما رأيك في هذا
He said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is a man from the poor of the Muslims. He is likely not to be married if he proposes, not to have his intercession accepted if he intercedes, and not to be listened to if he speaks." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
This (poor man) is better than such a large number of the first type (i.e. rich men) as to fill the earth. هذا خير من ملء الأرض مثل هذا
Sahih al-Bukhari 6447
.

The Shaykh : The reality is that the hadith by which al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) provided evidence does not match the chapter title, because the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
This (poor man) is better than such a large number of the first type (i.e. rich men) as to fill the earth. هذا خير من ملء الأرض مثل هذا
Sahih al-Bukhari 6447
does not indicate that this is due to poverty. He may be better than him for other deeds that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) knew. How many a rich man is better than a thousand poor men, and how many a poor man is better than a thousand rich men. So the reality is that if we look at poverty and wealth in themselves, wealth is better and more excellent, because wealth brings about private and public benefit that poverty does not bring about. For this reason, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed on which is better: the grateful rich man or the patient poor man? Some of them said: The grateful rich man is better, because he brings about much good and public benefit for the community that the poverty of the poor man does not bring about. And some of them said: Rather, the patient poor man is better; the patient poor man is better, because he has been patient with the trial and is among the patient ones. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned this discussion in his book *Bada'i' al-Fawa'id*: which is better, the grateful rich man or the patient poor man? But if we look at it in general terms, the grateful rich man is better, because the trial of wealth is not easy. When a person is tested with wealth and gives thanks, his suffering may be more severe than the suffering of the poor man in patience, because many of the rich, when Allah enriches them, are taken by arrogance and transgression,
And few of My servants are grateful. وقليل من عبادي الشكور
[Saba 34:13]
, as Allah the Mighty and Majestic said.
