Question:
This questioner asks: Is it permissible for us to seek intercession from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and how does the Messenger intercede for his Ummah, and when?

Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Intercession is established for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and for others among the angels and the righteous. Intercession is supplication; supplication is intercession with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). When you supplicate for someone, you have interceded for him. Intercession is established, but it does not occur except with two conditions: The first condition: The permission of Allah for the intercessor to intercede: {Who is he who can intercede with Him except by His permission?}. The second condition: That the one for whom intercession is sought be from the people of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), from the believers. As for the disbelievers and those who associate partners with Allah, the intercession of the intercessors does not benefit them with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He): {There is no close friend for the wrongdoers, nor any intercessor who will be obeyed} [Ghafir 18]. Intercession is sought from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in his presence (peace and blessings be upon him) during his lifetime; it is requested of him that he intercede. On the Day of Resurrection, the creation will request of him that he intercede for them with Allah in the judgment between them and to relieve them from the standing, and this is the Great Intercession and the Praiseworthy Station, as in His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): {And [perform] prayer during the night as additional [worship] for you. It is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station} [Al-Isra 79]. This is the Great Intercession, and it is specific to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). There are intercessions shared between the Messenger and others; the awliya (close friends of Allah) intercede, the angels intercede, and the prophets intercede. However, intercession does not occur except by the permission of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and His satisfaction with the one for whom intercession is sought. Intercession is a truth, and it is not denied except by the people of misguidance. It is a truth established in the Book and the Sunnah. As for seeking intercession from the Messenger, this is done during his lifetime, and on the Day of Resurrection, the creation will request of him that he intercede for them with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) to relieve them from the standing, as in the famous, well-known hadith.
