The questioner : The questioner says: Is it permissible to dye one's hair black? She mentions that she is a girl and says, "My hair is black, but I want to make it jet black. What is the ruling on 'mish,' what is called 'mish'?"

The Shaykh : As for changing white hair to black, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it, warned against it, and threatened those who do it. As for dyeing white hair with colors other than black, there is nothing wrong with it and no blame on one who does it. As for dyeing black hair to make it blacker, I fear that it is of the same kind as dyeing white hair black to make it black, though it may differ from that and not incur its ruling. However, the precaution is that the woman should not do it, meaning she should not dye her hair with the black that makes her hair blacker than it was, in order to be content with the decree and destiny of Allah. This is among the sunnahs that came in the creation of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Indeed, some women have jet black hair, some have hair that is less so, and some have yellow or gray hair, according to the nature in which Allah created them.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
