The questioner : He says: If my wudu' is broken while I am in the Eid prayer, and there is no time, and there is no water in the Eid mosque, is tayammum permissible? May Allah protect you.

The Shaykh : The majority of scholars hold that tayammum is not permissible for him, because one of the conditions of tayammum is the absence of water, and this person is not one who lacks water. So we tell him: go, perform wudu', and then come to the Eid prayer. If he catches it, that is good; if he does not catch it, he has left it for a valid excuse.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : But on the basis that the Eid prayer is among the recommended practices, or, should it not be less than the obligatory prayer?

The Shaykh : It is not less than the obligatory prayer in what is obligatory for it, because if purity is obligatory for it, then it must be performed according to what is prescribed by the Shari'ah with water.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If water is not found, then by tayammum.
