What is the ruling on one who cites verses from the Qur'an and the Sunnah in his discussion by way of jest, such as some saying, "So-and-so is the she-camel of Allah and its drink," and "To you is your religion and to me is mine"?

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Honorable, everything that comes with this, say "Honorable," because it is a possessive, and a vocative that is possessive is opened, yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh, and preserve you: Often, some people, during conversation, pass on their tongues verses from the Noble Qur'an or from the Sunnah by way of jest. For example, some might say, "So-and-so is
the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا
[Ash-Shams 91:13]
" or some might say to others, "
For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ
[Al-Kafirun 109:6]
" and today we saw "nun" and they do not know, and so on. And from the Sunnah: for example, if one of them is reminded and advised regarding his sin, he says, "My brother,
Taqwa is here التقوى هاهنا
" or he says, "
The religion is easy
" and so on. So what is your statement regarding such people, and what is your advice to them? May Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
As for the one who says this by way of mockery and ridicule, he is in great danger; it may be said that he has exited Islam, because the Qur'an is not permissible under any circumstances to be taken as a joke, and likewise the rulings of the Shari'ah, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
(64) They hypocrites are apprehensive lest a surah be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock [as you wish]; indeed, Allah will expose that which you fear." (65) And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" (66) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.
[At-Tawbah 9:64-66]

Therefore, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said: Whoever says a word of disbelief, even in jest, he becomes a disbeliever, and it is obligatory for him to repent, and to believe that he has repented from apostasy, so he renews his Islam. Thus, the verses of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Lord the Mighty and Majestic are too great to be taken as a joke or jest.
As for the one who cites a verse regarding an incident that occurred and happened, there is nothing wrong with that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cited verses regarding incidents. So he cited the saying of the Exalted:
your properties and your children are but a trial
[Al-Anfal 8:28]
when al-Hasan and al-Husayn came, stumbling in their garments, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) descended from the pulpit and took them, and said:
your properties and your children are but a trial
[Al-Anfal 8:28]
So there is nothing wrong with that. Citing verses regarding incidents is not a problem. But as for applying verses to what Allah did not intend with them, especially if that is accompanied by mockery and ridicule, the matter is very serious.
