The questioner : This is a question from one of the brother questioners. He asks: What is the ruling on one who uses inappropriate words in the Qur'an, or phrases or sentences, and this is in the category of joking, such as mentioning a word from the Qur'an and linking it to a colloquial word? What is your opinion regarding what is done in that matter? May Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : There is no difference in disbelief between the joker and the serious one. So whenever a person does what necessitates disbelief, he is a disbeliever, may Allah protect us from that. And among the greatest of that is to do something that implies mocking the Qur'an or ridiculing the Qur'an, for this is disbelief. We ask Allah for safety. As Allah the Mighty and Majestic said regarding the hypocrites who used to say, "We have not seen anyone like these our companions; they are the most greedy in bellies, the most lying in tongues, and the most cowardly at the time of meeting," meaning by that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). So Allah revealed concerning them:[At-Tawbah 9:64-66] So whoever utters a word of disbelief, he is a disbeliever, whether he utters it seriously, or as a joke, or as a play, or not joking. And it is obligatory upon the one who does that to repent to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and to consider himself as entering the religion of Islam after having exited from it. And it is obligatory upon the believer to honor the speech of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and to honor the speech of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), just as it is obligatory upon him to honor Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and to honor the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in a manner befitting Him, without being excessive in that.
As for mocking the Qur'an and linking the words of the Qur'an, which is the speech of the Lord of the Worlds, to colloquial words as a mockery, this is a very serious matter. We ask Allah for safety. It may cause a person to exit Islam without him realizing it. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.

(64) They hypocrites are apprehensive lest a surah be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock [as you wish]; indeed, Allah will expose that which you fear." (65) And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" (66) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.
