The jurists say that it is not permissible to ask for the comforts of this world in prayer, such as saying, “O Allah, grant me a beautiful slave girl or a large mount,” and that this invalidates the prayer.

The questioner : The jurists say that it is not permissible to ask for the comforts of this world in prayer, such as saying, “O Allah, grant me a beautiful slave girl or a large mount,” and that this invalidates the prayer. Is this correct, and is there a difference between the obligatory prayer and the voluntary prayer in this regard?

The Shaykh : The claim that it is not permissible for a person to ask for the comforts of this world in his prayer is not correct. A person may ask in his prayer and outside of his prayer for whatever he wishes. In the hadith, it is stated:
Let one of you ask his Lord even for the strap of his sandal. ليسأل أحدكم ربه حتى شراك نعله
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud, which is established in the two Sahihs, when he mentioned the tashahhud, he said:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him. ثم ليتخير من المسألة ما شاء
Sahih Muslim 402b
. His statement
Whatever he wishes. ما شاء
is a general expression, because
notما
is a relative pronoun, and a relative pronoun implies generality. Thus, it includes, or necessitates, answering the supplication with whatever one wishes from matters of religion, matters of this world, and matters of the Hereafter.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, it is permissible for a person to ask in the obligatory and voluntary prayers for what relates to matters of this world, such as saying, “O Allah, grant me a beautiful wife,” or “a good car,” or the like. This is because the generality of the hadiths indicates this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
As for prostration, increase in it the remembrance of Allah. أما السجود فأكثروا فيه من الدعاء
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:274
, and he did not specify one supplication over another. Therefore, the correct view in this matter is that it is permissible for a person to ask for whatever he wishes from the good of this world and the Hereafter in his prayer.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : He also says.
