The questioner : The questioner asks: Is it permissible for us to eat meat that has been slaughtered in a manner other than the Islamic method, given that there is no other option in the restaurant dedicated to lunch during the study period? If that is permissible because it is from the slaughter of the People of the Book, I know that it is not slaughtered, but rather by strangling, shooting, or with special machines?

The Shaykh : The slaughter of the People of the Book is lawful for us, as Allah the Exalted said:
and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you وطعام الذين أوتوا الكتاب حل لكم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:5]
It is not obligatory for us to ask how they slaughtered it, or whether they mentioned the name of Allah over it or not. In fact, it is not prescribed for us to ask, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as in Sahih al-Bukhari,
Some people asked him and said: O Messenger of Allah, people bring us meat and we do not know whether they mentioned the name of Allah over it or not? He said: Mention the name of Allah yourselves and eat. She said: And they were recent converts from disbelief سأله قوم فقالوا يا رسول الله إن قوماً يأتوننا باللحم لا ندري أذكروا اسم الله عليه أم لا؟ قال سموا أنتم وكلوا قالت : وكانوا حديثي عهد بكفر
This indicates that it is not prescribed for a person to ask about the slaughter of one whose slaughter is lawful, how it was slaughtered, or whether the name was mentioned or not.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was invited by a Jew to barley bread and a sauce of fish, and he did not ask him how that was slaughtered. Then, when a Jewish woman in Khaybar gifted him a sheep, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from it and did not ask her how it was slaughtered. So it is not prescribed, nor is it part of the Sunnah, for a person to ask about the slaughter of one whose slaughter is lawful, how it was slaughtered, or whether the name was mentioned or not. However, if you are certain that this specific slaughter presented to you was slaughtered in a manner other than the Islamic method, by being strangled, shot, thrown into hot water, or something similar to this which is not a lawful slaughter, then it is not lawful for you at that time. This is just as if a Muslim slaughtered it; if a Muslim slaughtered it in this manner, and the Muslim is undoubtedly better than the Jew or the Christian, and it is not lawful, then it is even more so that if a Jew or a Christian slaughters it without a lawful slaughter, it is not lawful.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And if the slaughter among the Christians or Jews is varied, meaning that some slaughter by strangling and some by slaughtering or cutting the throat, then it is doubtful whether it is from these or from those. In that case, a person should be cautious, because the method of precaution is that a person leaving what causes doubt for what does not cause doubt is better, more appropriate, and more excellent.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Also, in his letter, Abd al-Rahman Muhammad al-Asiri from France says: If it is...
