The Reciter: Abu al-Tahir, Harimah ibn Yahya, and Harun ibn Sa'id al-Ayili narrated to me, and the wording is that of Harun and Harimah. Harun said: "He narrated to us," and the other two said: "Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Yunus informed me from Ibn Shihab, who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz al-A'raj narrated to me that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 945a The hadith of Abu al-Tahir ends here. The other two added: Ibn Shihab said: Salim ibn Abdullah ibn Umar said: .
The Shaykh : This is part of the virtue of praying over the deceased. Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer is performed over the deceased receives one qirat. The apparent meaning of the hadith is that there is no difference between walking with the funeral procession from the house or attending it in the mosque. The important thing is that the funeral holds you until the prayer is performed over the deceased. Al-janazah, with a fathah on the jīm, means the deceased, and with a kasrah, it means the bed of the deceased, meaning the bier. The connection is apparent, because the deceased is above the bier, so it is appropriate for the word to have a fathah, and the bier is below him, so it is appropriate for the word to have a kasrah.
Now, as for "whoever attends until the burial receives two qirats": it appears, and Allah knows best, that he attended until the burial along with the prayer, meaning he combined the prayer and the burial, so he receives two qirats. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "What are the two qirats?" Are they a proportion of the reward of the deceased, as some who did not reflect on the hadith claimed, that a qirat is one of twenty-four parts, as is known in the science of inheritance, or one of twenty parts, and that the meaning is: a qirat of the reward of the deceased? This is undoubtedly an error, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the qirat, saying: "Like two great mountains." In another wording: "The smaller of them is like Mount Uhud." This is a great and large amount. In addition to this, it fulfills the right of the relatives of the deceased if they are greedy for the one who accompanies the funeral.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) used to pray over the funeral and then leave. When he was told this hadith, he said: "We have indeed wasted many qirats." After that, he began to go out [to attend the burials], because it was not possible for him to show that he had wasted this thing (may Allah be pleased with him) and then be negligent in it (may Allah be pleased with him), because he was among the most eager people for good.
He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats. It was said: What are the qirats? He said: They are equivalent to two huge mountains.
And Ibn Umar used to pray over it and then leave. When the hadith of Abu Hurayrah reached him, he said: "We have indeed wasted many qirats."
The Shaykh : This is part of the virtue of praying over the deceased.
