The reciter: And Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna and 'Uqbah ibn Makram al-'Ami narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi 'Adi narrated to us from Husayn from 'Abdullah ibn Buraydah, who said: Samurah ibn Jundub said: In the narration of Ibn al-Muthanna, he said: 'Abdullah ibn Buraydah narrated to me, saying: Sunan Abi Dawud 3195Sahih (Al-Albani)
The Shaykh : This is like the first, but it contains evidence of the perfect etiquette of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and that the younger among them did not speak in the presence of the elder out of respect for him. Among the things that indicate this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) posed as a riddle to his people, saying that there is a tree in the vegetation that is like the believer. So the people began to discuss the trees of the desert, and it came to the heart of 'Abd ibn 'Umar that it was the palm tree, but he did not speak because he was the youngest of the people, or among the youngest. This indicates to you that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were among the most polite of people, in that the younger one does not speak in the presence of the elder, out of respect and reverence for him. However, if the elder permits the younger one to speak, there is no harm, or if the elders are unable to answer a question, there is no harm in the younger one speaking to obtain the benefit. In this case, it is good for the younger one to say, "Do you permit me to speak?" if there is someone older than him in the place, or "Do you permit me to speak?" or "Do you allow me to speak?" or something similar.
I was a young man in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I used to memorize from him. What prevents me from speaking is that there are men here who are older than me. And I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a woman who died in childbirth, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in the middle of her for the prayer.
