The questioner : Also, he asks: Does a maternal brother have the right to take charge of marrying off a girl if a young man proposes to her, or is it her paternal brothers who take charge of her?

The Shaykh : Those who take charge of a woman's marriage are her awliya (close friends of Allah).

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Her maternal brothers do not have the authority to contract her marriage, unless the one who has authority among the 'asabah (residuary male heirs) delegates it to them. This is because the authority to contract marriage belongs exclusively to the 'asabah, and maternal brothers are not 'asabah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
