He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the edge of the well, and either he made a supplication or he spat into it. He said: So it bubbled up, and we drank from it and filled our vessels. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called us for the pledge of allegiance at the base of the tree. He said: So I pledged allegiance to him as the first of the people, then others pledged, and others pledged, until when he was in the middle of the people, he said: Pledge, O Salama. He said: I said: I have already pledged to you, O Messenger of Allah, as the first of the people. He said: And again. He said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that I was unarmed—meaning I had no weapon. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a shield—or a breastplate. Then he pledged, until when he was at the end of the people, he said: Will you not pledge to me, O Salama? He said: I said: I have pledged to you, O Messenger of Allah, as the first of the people, and in the middle of the people. He said: And again. He said: So I pledged to him for the third time. Then he said to me: O Salama, where is the shield—or breastplate—that I gave you? He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, my uncle 'Amir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: You are like the one who said: O Allah, seek for me a beloved who is dearer to me than myself. Then the polytheists sent us a message of peace until some of us walked among some of them, and we made a truce. He said: And I was a servant to Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah; I would water his horse, groom it, serve him, and eat from his food, and I left my family and my wealth, emigrating to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: So when we and the people of Makkah made a truce, and some of us mixed with some of them, I went to a tree and cleared its thorns, and I lay down at its base. He said: So four polytheists from the people of Makkah came to me, and they began to speak ill of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So I hated them, and I moved to another tree, and they hung up their weapons and lay down. So while they were like that, a caller from the bottom of the valley shouted: O emigrants, Ibn Zunaym has been killed! He said: So I drew my sword, then I rushed at those four while they were sleeping, and I took their weapons, and I gathered them into a bundle in my hand. He said: Then I said, by Him who has honored the face of Muhammad, no one of you shall raise his head except that I will strike what is in it—his eyes. He said: Then I brought them, driving them to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: And my uncle 'Amir came with a man from the 'Abalat, called Mikraz, leading him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a horse, having galloped through seventy polytheists. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at them and said: Let them go, so that they may have the first and the last of the sin. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pardoned them, and Allah revealed: And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them in the heart of Makkah, after He had given you victory over them, the entire verse. He said: Then we set out returning to al-Madinah, and we stopped at a place between us and Banu Lahyan, where there was a mountain, and they were polytheists. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sought forgiveness for whoever climbed this mountain that night, as if he were a scout for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions. Salama said: So I climbed that mountain that night two or three times. Then we arrived in al-Madinah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his camel with Rabah, the slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was with him, and I went out with him on Talhah's horse, calling it along with the camel. So when it became morning, lo, 'Abd al-Rahman al-Fazari had raided the camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he drove it all away, and killed its shepherd. He said: So I said: O Rabah, take this horse and deliver it to Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah, and inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that the polytheists have raided his grazing animals. He said: Then I stood on a hill, facing al-Madinah, and I called out three times: O morning! Then I went out in the tracks of the people, shooting them with arrows and reciting a poem, saying: I am the son of al-Akwa', and today is the day of the sucklings. So I caught up with a man of them and I struck an arrow into his saddle, until the tip of the arrow reached his shoulder. He said: I said: Take it, and I am the son of al-Akwa', and today is the day of the sucklings. He said: By Allah, I kept shooting them and killing them, so whenever a horseman turned back to me, I would go to a tree, sit at its base, then shoot him and kill him, until when the mountain narrowed and they entered its narrowness, I climbed the mountain and began to throw stones at them. He said: So I kept doing that, pursuing them, until not a single camel from the camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained except that I left it behind me, and they left me between it and them. Then I pursued them, shooting at them, until they dropped more than thirty cloaks and thirty spears, trying to lighten their load, and they did not drop anything except that I placed stones on it so that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions would recognize it, until they reached a narrow part of a pass, and lo, so-and-so ibn Badr al-Fazari had come to them, so they sat down to have a light meal—meaning to have breakfast—and I sat on the top of a ridge. Al-Fazari said: What is this that I see? They said: We have met with hardship from this place, and by Allah, he has not left us since it became dark, shooting at us until he has taken everything in our hands. He said: So let four of you go up to him. He said: So four of them climbed the mountain to me. He said: So when they were close enough for me to speak, I said: Do you know me? They said: No, and who are you? He said: I said: I am Salama ibn al-Akwa', and by Him who has honored the face of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I do not seek a man from you except that I catch him, and no man from you seeks me so that he catches me. One of them said: I think so. He said: So they returned, and I did not leave my place until I saw the horsemen of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moving through the trees. He said: So the first of them was al-Akhram al-Asadi, behind him Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, and behind him al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad al-Kindi. He said: So I grabbed the bridle of al-Akhram. He said: So they turned and fled. I said: O Akhram, beware of them, lest they cut you off until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions catch up with you. He said: O Salama, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day, and you know that Paradise is true and the Fire is true, then do not stand between me and martyrdom. He said: So I let him go, and he met 'Abd al-Rahman. He said: So he killed the horse of 'Abd al-Rahman, and 'Abd al-Rahman struck him and killed him, and he switched to his horse. And Abu Qatadah, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), caught up with 'Abd al-Rahman, and struck him and killed him. By Him who has honored the face of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I pursued them, running on my feet, until I did not see behind me any of the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), nor any of their dust, until they turned before the setting of the sun toward a valley with water called Dhaw Qarad, to drink from it, and they were thirsty. He said: So they looked at me running behind them, so I let them be—meaning I kept them away from it—so they did not taste a drop of it. He said: And they went out and rushed into a pass. He said: So I ran and caught up with a man of them and struck him with an arrow in the hollow of his shoulder. He said: I said: Take it, and I am the son of al-Akwa', and today is the day of the sucklings. He said: O you whose mother has lost her son, your al-Akwa' in the morning. He said: I said: Yes, O enemy of yourself, your al-Akwa' in the morning. He said: And they dropped two horses on a pass. He said: So I came with them, driving them to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: And 'Amir caught up with me with a cup containing a measure of milk and a cup containing water, so I performed ablution and drank, then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was at the water from which I had driven them away..
