Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd Allah Abu Thabit narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us from Ibn Shihab from 'Ubayd ibn al-Sabaq from Zayd ibn Thabit, who said: Abu Bakr sent for me when the people of Yamamah were killed, and 'Umar was with him. Abu Bakr said: "Indeed, 'Umar came to me and said: 'The killing has become severe on the day of Yamamah among the reciters of the Qur'an, and I fear that the killing will become severe among the reciters of the Qur'an in all the regions, and much of the Qur'an will be lost. And I see that you should order the collection of the Qur'an.' I said: 'How can I do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do?' 'Umar said: 'It is, by Allah, better.' 'Umar kept pressing me about it until Allah expanded my chest for what He had expanded the chest of 'Umar for, and I saw in that what 'Umar saw.' Zayd said: Abu Bakr said: 'And you are a young man of sound mind, and we do not suspect you. You used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so follow up the Qur'an and collect it.' Zayd said: 'By Allah, if I had been tasked with moving a mountain of mountains, it would not have been heavier for me than what I was tasked with regarding the collection of the Qur'an.' I said: 'How can you do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do?' Abu Bakr said: 'It is, by Allah, better.' He kept pressing me about it until Allah expanded my chest for what Allah had expanded the chest of Abu Bakr and 'Umar for, and I saw in that what they saw. So I followed up the Qur'an, collecting it from palm-leaf stalks, pieces of leather, flat stones, and the chests of men. I found the end of Surat al-Tawbah, 'Indeed, there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves,' to its end, with Khuzaymah or Abu Khuzaymah, so I appended it to its surah. And the pages were with Abu Bakr during his life until Allah took him, then with 'Umar during his life until Allah took him, then with Hafsa, the daughter of 'Umar..

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The chapter on what is recommended, or the chapter on what is recommended for the scribe to be trustworthy and intelligent. The author's (may Allah have mercy on him) expression of recommendation here is questionable; the correct view is that it is obligatory for him to be trustworthy, for trustworthiness is a condition in every position of authority. The jinn said:
I will bring it to you before you rise from your place, and indeed, I am for this [task] strong and trustworthy."
[An-Naml 27:39]
, and one of the two daughters said:
O my father, hire him; indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and trustworthy.
. So trustworthiness is a condition in every work involving authority. As for his saying "intelligent," by intelligence he (may Allah have mercy on him) means the intelligence of sound judgment, not the intelligence of perception, for the intelligence of perception is a condition, and it is not possible to appoint a madman as a scribe. But his intention is the intelligence of sound judgment, meaning that he is sound in his writing and in his judgment, with far-sightedness, so that the matter is completed as it should be.
