The reciter: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Chapter on seeking with the names of Allah the Exalted and seeking refuge in them.
Muslim narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us from 'Abd al-Malik from Rubay'i from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
When the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) went to his mattress, he would say: ‘O Allah, in Your Name I shall die and live,’ and when he woke up, he would say: ‘Praise be to Allah, who has revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection!' كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا أوى إلى فراشه قال : اللهم باسمك أحيا وأموت وإذا أصبح قال الحمدلله الذي أحيانا بعدما أماتنا وإليه النشور

The Shaykh : This hadith was mentioned by al-Bukhari in the chapter on seeking with the names of Allah and seeking refuge in them. As for seeking with the names of Allah, we have previously discussed this, and Allah has commanded us to do so. Therefore, Allah the Exalted said:
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them ولله الأسماء الحسنى فادعوه بها
[Al-A'raf 7:180]
. As for seeking refuge in them, likewise, you seek refuge in the names of Allah, saying: "I seek refuge in Allah, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful, I seek refuge in the Mighty, and the like of that." It has also been established previously that seeking refuge (istighathah) is taking hold of protection from what is disliked, and seeking shelter (lujja') is fleeing to obtain what is desired. Thus, seeking refuge is from what is disliked, and seeking shelter is for obtaining what is desired. We recited a verse of poetry on this matter; does anyone remember it?
"O He in whom I take shelter in what I hope for, *** And in whom I seek refuge from what I fear
People cannot mend a bone that You have broken, *** nor can they break a bone that You have mended"

Then he brought the hadith.
