Explanation of the Book of the Adhan-06b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Abu Hazim ibn Dinar from Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf to reconcile them. When the time for prayer came, the mu'adhdhin came to Abu Bakr and said, "Will you lead the people in prayer? I will give the iqamah." He said, "Yes." So Abu Bakr prayed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came while the people were in prayer. He passed through until he stood in the row. The people clapped, and Abu Bakr did not turn his head in his prayer. When the people increased their clapping, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to remain in his place. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered him to do. Then Abu Bakr moved back until he was aligned in the row, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward and prayed. When he finished, he said:
0 Abu Bakr, what prevented you from standing (at that place) as I ordered you to do? يا أبا بكر ما منعك أن تثبت إذ أمرتك
Sahih Muslim 421a
Then Abu Bakr said, "It was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Why did you clap so much? If something happens to anyone during his prayer he should say Subhan Allah. If he says so he will be attended to, for clapping is for women. ما لي رأيتكم أكثرتم التصفيق من رابه شيء في صلاته فليسبح فإنه إذا سبح التفت إليه وإنما التصفيق للنساء
Sahih al-Bukhari 684

The Shaykh : This heading means: if one enters to lead the people in prayer and the original imam arrives, the one who entered to lead should step back. Or if he does not step back, his prayer is valid.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, how? I do not have the version where the first one steps back. I have a copy that says "ten"; I have number ten, the other is a second copy. The scenario is that the regular imam is absent and does not attend, so his deputy steps forward to lead the people in prayer. Then the regular imam arrives. Does the deputy remain as he was and complete the prayer, or does he step back? We say: if he remains and completes the prayer, there is no harm. And if he steps back and the second one completes it, there is no harm. But if the regular imam arrives during the first rak'ah, there is no issue with the matter, no issue with the affair. The reason is that he will say the taslim when the people complete four rak'ahs. The issue is if he arrives during the second rak'ah or any rak'ah after that. It is known that if the people complete their prayer, he will still have the portion of the prayer he missed. So if we assume he arrived during the second rak'ah and completed the prayer with them, when their prayer is finished, he still has one rak'ah remaining. What does he do, and what do they do? Do we say: sit and say the taslim with them, then make up what you missed? Or do we say: stand up for what you missed, and they have the choice to wait for you or say the taslim? The answer is the second option, because it is not possible for him to sit and say the taslim before completing his prayer. Based on this, we tell the ma'mum: if you wish, wait until he finishes his prayer and says the taslim with you. And if you wish, separate yourselves, because you are excused.
