What is the meaning of the verse: {And He is Allah in the heavens and on the earth; He knows what you conceal and what you declare, and He knows what you earn}?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Meaning, what?

The questioner : When we want to affirm one of the essential attributes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Such as the hand, he says.

The Shaykh : The descriptive ones.

The questioner : The descriptive ones.

The Shaykh : Essential, informational.

The questioner : Yes, he says Allah has a hand, meaning a limb, using this expression. Is this correct?

The Shaykh : No, no. Those who deny the hand say: if we affirm the hand, it would necessitate affirming a limb for Him. And what does a limb mean? A limb means a wound, in the sense of a break, as He the Exalted said:
[game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals
[Al-Ma'idah 5:4]
the breakers, and as He said:
and knows what you have committed by day
[Al-An'am 6:60]
. This would imply that Allah breaks things. We say: this is correct regarding a human being, but not regarding the Creator. Do not say "limb" or "not a limb." Say: Allah has a hand with which He takes and with which He grasps. Yes...

The questioner : Do we advise him?

The Shaykh : Yes, yes. It is forbidden for you. We say: it is forbidden for you to say it this way.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. What is the grammatical structure of the verse:
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.
[Al-An'am 6:3]
?

The Shaykh : Yes, yes. Have you read the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And it is Allah who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity
[Az-Zukhruf 43:84]
?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Good. What is the meaning of
And it is Allah who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity
[Az-Zukhruf 43:84]
? Complete. It means that His divinity is established in the heavens and on the earth, just as one says: so-and-so is the governor in Makkah and the governor in Madinah. It is clear that his governorship is established in both countries, even if he is in one of them. The divinity of Allah the Exalted is established in the heavens and on the earth, but He is in the heavens. Complete. The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public
[Al-An'am 6:3]
. If we say that the noble name "Allah" is derived, which is the correct view, then His saying:
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth
[Al-An'am 6:3]
is like His saying:
And it is Allah who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity
[Az-Zukhruf 43:84]
, exactly the same. It means that the divinity of Allah is established in the heavens and established on the earth. Accordingly,
He knows your secret and what you make public
[Al-An'am 6:3]
is a new sentence. Did you understand?
There is another opinion. Stop at His saying:
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens
[Al-An'am 6:3]
, then start and say:
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.
[Al-An'am 6:3]
. The meaning would be that Allah is in the heavens, and that He knows what you conceal and what you declare on the earth. So who is on the earth? The servants. The servants. But the meaning is clearer because it matches the verse:
And He is the God in the heavens and the God on the earth
. Yes.
