The questioner : May Allah reward you. Some people add to the supplication after the ablution, O Shaykh: “O Allah, make me among the repentant, make me among the purified, and make me among Your righteous servants.” Is there a basis for this?

The Shaykh : We also add: “Make me among Your awliya (close friends of Allah) who are mindful of You, make me among Your party of the reformers, and make me among the humble and the certain.” Is this permissible? Note the rule: “The words that have been transmitted are not to be exceeded unless it is known from the Shari'ah that there is no harm in adding to them”. For example, in the tasbih of “Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi” (Glory be to Allah and His is praise) one hundred times, if a person adds more, there is no prohibition. However, in the specific tasbih, one does not exceed what has been transmitted. Even in the tasbih after prayer, one should not add to what has been transmitted while believing that it is better. But if one adds to it as general tasbih, there is no harm. Therefore, the important thing is that a person should not add to the saying: “O Allah, make me among the repentant, make me among the purified.”
