with an obvious indecency
with the yā’ opened and kasrah
made clear
clear
meaning it was made clear, or it is clear
will be doubled
and in a reading with the doubling
will be weakened
with the shaddah, and in another
We will weaken
with the nūn, along with it, meaning along with the shaddah, and the accusative case of the punishment
We will weaken for her the punishment
so in it, then, are three readings:
will be doubled
and
will be weakened
and
We will weaken
so according to the first two readings, the punishment is in the nominative case
will be doubled or will be weakened
meaning the punishment in the nominative case is the passive subject, and according to the third reading
We will weaken
the punishment is in the accusative case as the object, saying:
for her the punishment would be doubled two fold
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
double the punishment of the others, meaning its equivalent
and that is easy for Allah
O wives of the Prophet
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
The call from Allah Mighty and Majestic is directed to the wives of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and that is for the importance of what will be addressed to them and to alert them to what will be conveyed to them.
whoever of you should commit a clear immorality
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
Who
من
This is conditional, and the verb of the condition is
commits
يأت
and
is doubled
the response of the condition. And his saying:
whoever of you should commit a clear immorality
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
What is meant by the indecency? Is the indecency meant to be fornication? Or is the indecency meant to be foul speech and overstepping regarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and going beyond decency? Or is it meant to be both this and that? Some of the people of knowledge said that the latter is meant and that fornication is not meant, even though indecency comes in the Qur'an meant as fornication and comes meant as foulness of tongue and overstepping. Allah the Exalted said:
Those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you
[Al-Nisa: 15] What is meant by the indecency here? Fornication. And He said:
Do not turn them out of their [husbands'] houses, nor should they [themselves] leave [during that period] unless they are committing a clear immorality
[Al-Talaq: 1] and the indecency meant here is foulness of tongue and its sharpness. So if she is foul-tongued and sharp-tongued, she will utter words that go beyond decency, so her husband has the right to expel her from the house during the waiting period. Now, if we say that this verse includes the indecency which is fornication and the indecency which is foulness of tongue, that does not mean that it will happen to them, because the condition does not necessitate its occurrence, as Allah the Exalted said:
Say, [O Muhammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."
[Al-Zukhruf: 81] Is that possible?
Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined
[Al-Anbiya: 22] Is that possible? It is not possible.
if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless
[Al-Zumar: 65] It is not possible, this either. So the occurrence of a thing suspended by a condition does not necessitate the permissibility of the condition occurring. And on this basis, let the verse be
whoever of you should commit a clear immorality
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
let it be inclusive of fornication, but this is something impossible. However, if we say that the indecency meant is sharpness of tongue and going beyond the customary and decency in speech, this may happen from women, even from the Mothers of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with them), and there is no defect in them for that, because it is the nature of women: jealousy, it is the nature of women: jealousy and not guarding the tongue and not being deliberate in matters. And in any case, Allah Mighty and Majestic says:
whoever of you should commit a clear immorality - for her the punishment would be doubled two fold
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
and that is for their honor and high status, so the sin from them is greater than the sin from others. For this reason, if a free woman commits fornication, she is flogged or stoned, and if a slave woman commits fornication, there is upon her only half of what is upon the chaste women of the punishment, for the honor of the first and the lowliness of the rank of the second. So the wives of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) have of the status and the high and the fortified fortress what necessitates that the punishment be doubled upon them if they commit an obvious indecency. For this reason he said:
for her the punishment would be doubled two fold
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
So if the recompense is the recompense of a bad deed, a bad deed like it, then the recompense of the bad deed that Allah mentioned here, the obvious indecency regarding the wives of the Messenger, is two bad deeds, the recompense of which is two bad deeds. For this reason he said:
for her the punishment would be doubled two fold
[Al-Ahzab 33:30]
meaning it is repeated upon them twice.
And that was
meaning the doubling of the punishment upon them, that was easy for Allah. So what is referred to is the doubling of the punishment. That was easy for Allah, not difficult for Him. Why did he say
And that was easy for Allah
? So that no one would think that this is a difficult matter for Allah because it is a matter concerning the wives of His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So Allah Mighty and Majestic clarified that this is an easy matter for Him, for He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has no kinship between Him and His creation. The most noble of creation in His sight is the most pious of them to Him, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you
[Al-Hujurat: 13].
