Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And it is said to the angels

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
“And it is said to the angels
Gather those who committed wrong
[As-Saffat 37:22]
themselves through shirk
and their spouses وأزواجهم
their companions from among the Shayatin (devils)
and what they used to worship
[As-Saffat 37:22]
other than Allah, meaning other than Him, namely the idols
so guide them فاهدوهم
direct them and drive them
to the path of Jahim
the path of the Fire”

I seek refuge in Allah. “Gather those who wronged.” The address here is from Allah, and the knowledge is with Him, to the angels. The meaning of “gather” is “assemble,” as Allah the Exalted said:
The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation
[At-Taghabun 64:9]
It is called the Day of Assembly and the Day of Gathering because people are gathered and assembled on it. As for His saying:
those who wronged themselves
[Ibrahim 14:45]

those who committed wrong, their kinds
[As-Saffat 37:22]
The author said: “Their companions from among the Shayatin (devils)” Every spouse is a companion, and from this comes the term husband and wife, for they are companions. It was also said that the meaning of “spouses” is kinds and forms, as in His saying, the Exalted:
And other [punishments] of its type [in various] kinds.
[Sad 38:58]
meaning kinds. The meanings are close, because it is the norm that the companion is of the same kind as the one he accompanies, as came in the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
A man follows the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 33:79
[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship احشروا الذين ظلموا وأزواجهم وما كانوا يعبدون
[As-Saffat 37:22]
meaning, and what they used to worship? When? In this world. That is why the past tense verb was used: “they used to worship,” meaning in this world. The clause “they used to worship” is a relative clause, and the relative pronoun is omitted, and its estimation is: “and what they used to worship other than Allah.” And the author’s saying: “from the idols.”
If someone asks: How are the idols gathered, when they are inanimate, having no reckoning or punishment? The answer is that they are gathered to the Fire and thrown into the Fire as an insult to their worshippers. As for them, they have no sensation; they do not feel insult or honor. But their worshippers are the ones who feel the insult when their objects of worship are thrown into the Fire. So these objects of worship are thrown into the Fire as an insult to their worshippers and to demonstrate that they do not benefit them when they are in most need of their benefit. And His saying:
and what they used to worship (23) Other than Allah
[As-Saffat 37:22-23]
This verse is general, and it was specified by His saying, the Exalted:
Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed.
[Al-Anbya 21:101]
Because if we took it in its generality, there would be among people those who worship the prophets, and there would be among people those who worship the angels. Would these worshipped ones be gathered with these worshippers? The answer is no.
Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.
[Al-Anbya 21:98]
Then he said:
Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed.
[Al-Anbya 21:101]
And on this basis, the generality here is specified by His saying:
Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us
[Al-Anbya 21:101]

It was also said that the generality remains as it is, but it is a generality intended for the specific, intended for those who denied the Resurrection. Those who denied the Resurrection did not worship the angels or the messengers; rather, they used to worship Hubal, al-Lat, al-Manat, and al-Uzza. Hubal, al-Lat, al-Uzza, and al-Manat are all in the Fire. In any case, whether we say that this is a generality intended for the specific, meaning those who address the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and deny the Resurrection, or we say that it is a general statement that is specified, there is no doubt that those who worship other than Allah, and they are from the awliya (close friends of Allah), will not be gathered to the Fire and will not enter it.
and what they used to worship (23) Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire
[As-Saffat 37:22-23]
“Guide them,” meaning direct them. This is guidance of indication, and this does not contradict His saying, the Exalted:
(85) On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation (86) And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst
[Maryam 19:85-86]
For the one who is driven is also guided. Have you seen a man driving his camel and guiding it, or not? He guides it. These are driven, and at the same time it is said to them: “Go from here, go from here,” until they reach the Fire. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, mentioned that these are driven to the Fire in a state where they need, rather are compelled, to water.
And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst
[Maryam 19:86]
Thirsty. So when they come, they will find nothing but the scorching Fire, and refuge is sought in Allah. And this will be like a slap on their faces, where they came hoping to drink, but they are surprised by what increases their blaze and thirst.
and what they used to worship (23) Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire
[As-Saffat 37:22-23]
“Sirat” means path, and the Sirat is of two types: a physical Sirat, which is what feet walk upon, and a conceptual Sirat, which is what hearts walk upon. So whoever is upright on the conceptual Sirat upon the religion of Allah, he will be upright on the physical Sirat on the Day of Resurrection until he reaches Paradise. And whoever is not upright in this world upon the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) of Allah, he will not be upright in the Hereafter on the path to Paradise, but on the path to the Fire. Here,
so guide them to the path of the Blazing Fire
Is the Sirat here physical or conceptual? Physical. And disbelief is conceptual. Good.
to the path of the Blazing Fire
And His saying:
the Blazing Fire الجحيم
“Said: The Fire” So Jahim is thus one of the names of the Fire, and the names of the Fire in the Qur'an are numerous and varied. It may be good that we ask one of you to count them for us from the Qur'an. Are you ready? Until when? Until tomorrow, Tuesday.
The student: Wednesday.

The Shaykh : Wednesday.
