In the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Gather those who wronged and their wives and what they used to worship,” is this verse to be understood in its generality?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student: In our previous lesson, we excluded from the saying of Allah the Exalted... some of the polytheists who worship other than those who worship the sun and the moon?

The Shaykh : They will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection with their worshippers and cast into the Fire, meaning the moon and the sun themselves, as well as everything worshipped besides Allah. Nothing is excluded from this except those for whom good has preceded.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : There is no doubt that whoever initiates a bad practice bears its sin and the sin of everyone who acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection. However, these people had messengers sent to them who clarified the truth to them, yet they preferred these misguiders over the messengers. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said in Surat Saba:
and We will put shackles on the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be recompensed except for what they used to do? وجعلنا الأغلال في أعناق الذين كفروا هل يجزون إلا ما كانوا يعملون
[Saba 34:33]

The student: ...
The Shaykh : This is the most accurate view, and Allah knows best, in cases where there was no call from messengers. But where there was a call from messengers, these people had messengers who came with signs that humans cannot match, and they clarified the truth to them, yet they said, “We do not accept it.”
The reciter: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.
(27) And they will approach one another blaming each other. (28) They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right." (29) The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers, (30) And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people. (31) So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment]. (32) And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators." (33) So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment. (34) Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals. (35) Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant (36) And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" (37) Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.
